Project Homeward Bound Coalition
On December 3 and 4, 2007, Lewis County, Washington experienced the worst flooding on record during a 500-year storm. Particularly hard hit were the communities of Doty, Dryad and Meskill. Nearly 20 inches of rain fell in a 48 hour period, causing water levels to rise more than 50 times the normal level in the communities of Doty, Dryad and Meskill. During the flood, the Chehalis River at Doty rose over 30 feet creating a tsunami-like wave. In addition to hurricane-force winds, the wave wiped out everything in its path, including family pets and killing an estimated 1600 head of livestock.
Working with the community and the local fire chief, Rural America Foundation is locating and arranging for delivery of donated manufactured homes for families who lost everything. We are calling this flood relief effort “Homeward Bound Coalition.”
FIRST HOME DONATED BY THE STILLAGUAMISH TRIBE
The first home we moved was Monday Feb 18 – donated by the Stillaguamish Tribe in Arlington – to Mike and Mary Hurley, Dryad, WA.

SECOND HOME DONATED BY PORT BLAKELY COMPANIES
The second home we moved was completely donated by Port Blakely Companies on Wed Feb 27 – Dave Roberts, the roads engineer for Port Blakely Tree Farms was a hero and deserves so much credit.

Assessment of need
Homeward Bound is currently working in the communities of Doty, Dryad and Meskill with families displaced by the flood who have homes not worth rebuilding. The effort will be extended and replicated as donations and in-kind contributions allow. The Seattle Times reported on February 2, 2008 that: “County officials also estimate more than 600 homes suffered major damage, with more than 70 not worth rebuilding.”
Funding and Time
Grants, cash, in-kind donations and volunteer labor all contribute to the success of RAF activities. Currently the HBC coalition is consuming the bulk of the time and attention. If you woul like to contribute financially or donate your time and talents to our efforts please contact us.
